Whimwhirls

As promised, here is a bit of new lore for the Feengrenze. Whimwhirls, the reality breaking storms that plague the surface of the Feengrenze.

Whimwhirls, also called Wonderstorms or Reality Storms, are one of the most iconic and feared phenomena in The FeenGrenze. Looking like tornados that were crushed into a ball, these swirling masses of wild magic and the natural law tumble across the land, bouncing off the hills and mountains like pinballs. Nothing is left untouched in the wake of the whimwhirls passage as they permanently alter everything in their path, often beyond recognition. Time fractures, space twists itself into knots, geography oozes, climate unravels, and any poor creature or person caught in one is transformed in often horrifying and often fatal ways. As well as permanent disruptions to reality and terrifying transformations, whirl whims leave ruins, people, and other detritus from other worlds in their wake, often tossed far and wide over the landscape with no rhyme or reason and no indication of where or how the ruins and survivors come from.

While surviving a Whimwhirl is already considered rare, escaping one unchanged is even more unlikely. The most common fates for creatures caught within these storms include:

  • Transformation into Knochenvolk: One of the more “benign” outcomes of being caught in a Whimwhirl is becoming one of the bone people or Knochenvolk. The victims’ flesh is flayed from their bones, and their sanity is flayed from their minds. While one would assume that this would be fatal the magic of the storm keeps the victim alive. The resultant creature individuals take on skeletal, undead forms and develop eccentric, darkly humorous personalities.
  • Being Turned to Glass or Stone: Some unfortunate souls find their bodies transformed into strange materials. Glass statues, marble figures, and crystalized forms litter the areas where Whimwhirls have passed. Occasionally, these individuals remain sentient, trapped in a prison of their new forms.
  • Merging with the Environment: There are tales of people and animals becoming one with the natural world—merged into trees, rocks, or streams. These beings remain alive but inextricably fused to their surroundings, existing in a permanent state of limbo.
  • Awakening Animals and Plants: Creatures who survive a Whimwhirl are often affected by an effect similar to the Awaken spell. Animals gain intelligence and the ability to speak, while plants gain sentience and personalities. These awakened beings are known for their strange, whimsical behavior, mirroring the chaos of the storm that transformed them.

The unpredictable nature of Whimwhirls has shaped the way people in Feengrenze live. Settlements are typically built in sheltered areas such as mountain valleys, grottos, caves, or even underwater to avoid being caught in the path of these storms. Many communities have learned to detect the approach of a Whimwhirl by watching for strange atmospheric shifts, giving them time to take shelter.
